ONU Theater Arts will livestream the production of “Blocked!”

The Ohio Northern University School of Visual and Performing Arts will present the musical “Blocked!” October 29-31 via livestream on freedcenter.com. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on October 29, 30 and 31, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on October 31.

“Blocked!” is the story of four teenagers trying to make connections online at a time when online is the only way they have. These four teenagers each face social anxieties and isolation in their own lives that are only exacerbated when schools are closed and in-person activities are disbanded. By coming together around their shared interest in a funny animal video, they unexpectedly form true online friendships that weave into a meaningful support network. They find ways to lean on each other for help, pick themselves up when they’re down, and provide much-needed light in a difficult time.

Tickets are $10 per device and $5 for students. To order, visit freedcenter.com or call the box office at 419-772-1900.

Directed by Courtney Kattengell, Assistant Professor of Musical Theater, “Blocked!” will be performed by two casts of four UN students each, including Grant Bell, a freshman mechanical engineering and musical theater student from Brunswick, Ohio; Emily Estep, a musical theater student from Fresno, California; Madison Friedhoff, a sophomore musical theater student from Cypress, Texas; Zachary Ryan, a sophomore in mechanical engineering and musical theater from Westerville, Ohio; Hailey Elswick, a sophomore musical theater student from Woodstock, Georgia; Matthew Garcia, a freshman musical theater student from Mentor, Ohio; Laura Jacobs, a musical theater major from Beavercreek, Ohio; and Caleb Jingo, a sophomore musical theater student from Westerville, Ohio.

The music, lyrics, and book are by Ben Wexler, a New York-based composer, arranger, and artist teacher and artistic director of the Broadway Advocacy Coalition. Wexler provided additional coaching for the student actors involved in this production.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and security concerns, “Blocked!” will be posted online. Using popular video conferencing technology and open-source broadcast software, the production was rehearsed entirely online from individual spaces for each student performer and member of the production team.
