1925 Ernest Truex is The right guy for a group of drug dealers. The James Gleason-George Abbott comedy takes place at the Eltinge Theater for nearly three months.

1926 East Lynne, based on the popular novel of the same title, opens at the Greenwich Village Theater. It only presented 35 performances, but a 1930s film adaptation received an Oscar nomination for best picture.

1933 Sophie treadwellThe unlikely story of a prostitute who inherits a ranch lasts only three performances. It is a very Solitary Valley at the Plymouth Theater in New York.

1940 Playwright’s birthday David Rabe, which recounts the angst of the Vietnamese era in Banners and Pavlo Hummel’s basic training, and returns to the 1980s with a searing vision of the outskirts of Hollywood in Hurlyburly.

1953 A revival of the Gershwins Porgy and Bess opens a 305-performance series at the Ziegfeld Theater that survives the 1935 original. The revival stars Leontyne Price, Irving Barnes, Leonardo DeVinci, and Cabin calloway.

1954 A posthumous revival of Kurt weill‘s The Quat’sous Opera turns out to be his biggest success. The renewal of the Théâtre de Lys, translated by Marc Blitzstein and led by Carmen Capalbo, initially works for 96 performances. Due to popular demand, the production returned to the same theater the following year and lasted for seven years, becoming the longest-running Off-Broadway show (a record eventually surpassed by The Fantastic). Production stars include Bea Arthur, Monkfish Lenya, Scott merrill, Jo Sullivan, Jean Astin, and Charlotte rae.

1959 Sweet bird of youth performs at the Martin Beck Theater in New York. Geraldine Page plays the role of an aging actor with Paul newman as his paid escort. ripped ripped, Diana hyland, and Sidney blackmer are also in the cast. the Tennessee williams plays for 375 performances. Elia Kazan steps.

After a well-received Off-Broadway run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Candid opens today at the Broadway Theater in a boisterous production that transforms the traditional proscenium stage into a black box with playing spaces throughout the theater. Prince’s revision of the musical will become the blueprint upon which most future productions of the now-beloved work will be built.

1975 Critics and the public don’t know what to think Richard o’brien‘s London Import, a bizarre sci-fi musical called The Rocky Horror Show. It only presents 45 performances at the Belasco Theater. Stars Tim curry, Meatloaf, and O’Brien also stars in the film version, which is becoming one of the all-time successful cult classics.

1999 Richard chamberlain and Laura Benanti join the cast of The sound of music rebirth to become the new captain Von Trapp and Maria Rainer, after Michel siberry and Rebecca Luker. They close the production which ends on June 20 after 533 performances.

2000 Performances begin for Michael John La Chiusabroadway musical The wild party, featuring Toni Collette, Mandy patinkin, and Eartha Kitt. Coincidentally, this is the second New York musical of this season to be based on this 1928 poem by Joseph Moncure Mars. Off-broadway Manhattan Theater Club staged composer-lyricist-librettist Andrew Lippaversion of with the same title.

2002 Edward albeethe controversial drama The goat or who is Sylvia? opens on Broadway. The story of a man who destroys his marriage and his life when he falls in love with a goat wins the 2003 Tony Award for Best Play.

2014 Robert askins‘irreverent comedy Hand to god opens Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theater. Steven boyer takes on the role of Jason, a soft-spoken student of the Christian Puppet Ministry, who becomes possessed by his rude sock puppet. The production transfers to Broadway the following year.

2016 Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams star in David Harrower’s first Broadway film Blackbird, opening at the Belasco Theater. Joe Mantello directs the play about a 27-year-old woman who finds and confronts the man who sexually assaulted her when she was 12. The play was previously seen in New York City in a 2007 Off-Broadway production, also directed by Mantello, who played Daniels opposite Alison Pill.

2019 The musical by Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz Be cooler opens on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater. The show is coming to Broadway with a cult following, thanks to the popularity of recording the cast of its 2015 world premiere at the Two River Theater in New Jersey. Will Roland plays Jeremy, an average teenager who takes a pill that’s supposed to make people colder, you guessed it.

2019 Tori Sampson’s World Premiere If Pretty Hurts Ugly has to be a Muhfucka opens at Playwrights Horizons, directed by Leah C. Gardiner and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the piece is a contemporary riff on a West African fable bursting with live music and dance. In the village of Affreakah-Amirrorkah, no one questions the fact that Akim is the only true and perfect beauty, not even his jealous classmates. But they’ll be damned before they let her be the main lady in this story.
