1856 Comedian Eddie Foy was born. He plays in vaudeville and on Broadway, notably in Mr. Hamlet from Broadway, The Earl and the Girl, and Pif! Paf !! Pouf !!! Her son, Eddie Foy Jr., also stars on Broadway.

1922 Eugene O’Neillthe drama The hairy monkey, the story of a driver brutalized by his work, opens at the Provincetown Playhouse.

1959 Juno, Marc Blitzsteinthe musical adaptation of Juno and the rooster, opens at the Winter Garden Theater with The Shirley stand and Melvyn douglas. He only performs 16 performances.

1961 Doré Schary adapts and directs Morris West’s novel Devil’s advocate. Leo Genn stars in the drama which features 116 performances at the Billy Rose Theater.

1966 English Stage Company receives 18 invitations following William Gaskill’s production Edward Bondthe controversial piece Checked in. Lord Chamberlain had called for certain changes to be made; the company did not comply. Bond and the company are obligated to pay the costs.

1978 Molière in spite of himself performs at the Colonnades Theater Lab in New York. The drama is adapted and directed by Michel Lessac and lasts 100 performances.

1978 Encompass Theater, an Off-Off-Broadway group, is launching a series of plays titled Hear Their Voices: The Founders of American Theater, 1910-1945.

1986 During the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Hamlet, Kevin kline inhabits the “distracted globe” of the bard’s immortal counterpart. play runs at Joseph PapiPublic theater from until May 11.

1989 that of Wendy Wasserstein The Chronicles of Heidi opens at the Plymouth Theater. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning theater stars Joan allen and becomes something of a landmark in plays by and about modern American women.

Lin-Manuel Miranda co-wrote and starred in the show about the lives of Latino residents of Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood, with Mandy gonzalez, Karen Olivo, and Priscilla Lopez. The production won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

2009 33 variations, writer-director Moisés Kaufmanthe music-infused game that attracted Jane fonda returning to Broadway after an absence of 46 years, opens at the Eugene O’Neill Theater.

2010 Love never dies, Andrew Lloyd WebberFollowing The Phantom of the Opera, opens at the Adelphi Theater in the West End. Located at the Coney Island exhibition center 10 years after the disappearance of the Phantom of the Paris Opera, the music stars Ramin karimloo and Sierra Bogges like The Phantom and Christine.

2017 Sally Field and Joe Mantello star in Tennessee Williams cover Glass factory, opening at the Belasco Theater. This is Field’s second time as Southern matriarch Amanda Wingfield, having previously played the role in a 2004 production at the Kennedy Center.

2019 The world premiere of “Dad” by Jeremy O. Harris officially opens Off-Broadway at the Pershing Square Signature Center on March 5. Directed by Danya Taymor, the new drama is an exploration of intimacy and identity in which Basquiats, gospel and fantasy collide around a pool of Bel Air. The main actors are Ronald Peet, Alan Cumming and Charlayne Woodard.

2020 The Conor McPherson-Bob Dylan Musical Girl from the north of the country opens at the Belasco Theater on Broadway. The show, which features music from the Dylan catalog, is currently on hiatus due to the ongoing pandemic. Featuring a book and staging by McPherson, the Great Depression-era musical offers a glimpse into a small community in Duluth, Minnesota, where the Laine family operate a dilapidated guesthouse.
