1922 The lucky is the brother who doesn’t get the girl in AA Milne’s play. It is directed at the Theater Guild by Theodore Komisarjevsky with a cast including Dennis King, Romney Brent and Helen Westley.
1934 Lillian hellman‘s Children’s time opens at Maxine Elliot’s Theater. Its lesbian theme is causing a stir, but Brooks Atkinson calls the play “venomous tragic.” The stars are Anne Revere, Catherine emery, and Florence McGee in the show which lasts 691 performances.
1943 An interesting war artifact, Winged Victory, opens a race of 212 performances at the 44th Street Theater. Moss deer writes the screenplay and Sgt. David Rose wrote the music for the military-themed play with music, the only Broadway show ever produced by the US Army Air Forces.
1946 Lillian Hellman has another Broadway show on this day in theater history. This time, she is staging her play, Another part of the forest, which opens at the Fulton Theater. He revisits some of the characters from Little foxes earlier in their life. The cast includes Patricia neal, Sweet dunnock, and Leo Genn in the 23 week run.
1952 George axelrodthe comedy The seven year itch, about a married man eager to get lost with a beautiful neighbor, opens at the Fulton Theater. The cast includes Tom ewell and Vanessa Brown in the role that Marilyn Monroe immortalized in the 1955 film (which also stars Ewell). The Broadway production lasts 1,141 incredible performances and wins the Tony Award for Best Dramatic Actor at Ewell.
1957 Rope dancers, realized by Pierre Hall, with a cast including Siobhan McKenna, Art Carney, Joan blondell, and Theodore Bikel, begins a 24-week race. The drama of Morton Wishengrad deals with the life of an apartment family in New York at the turn of the century.
1966 “Life is Beautiful” inside the Broadhurst Theater as Cabaret opens on Broadway. Adapted by Joe masteroff of Christopher Isherwood‘s Berlin stories, with a note of John kander and Fred ebb, the show lasts 1,165 performances. He won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction in a Musical (Harold Prince) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical (Joel Gray). Gray repeated his performance as master of ceremonies in the film adaptation of Bob Fosse in 1972, which won him an Oscar.
1983 Opening night for Marilyn: an American fable, a rock opera about the life of movie star Marilyn Monroe. Despite a team of ten songwriters working on the score, the show only manages 17 performances at the Minskoff Theater. Alyson roseau plays Norma Jean / Marilyn.
1990 James clavellthe best-selling novel by Shogun becomes an unsuccessful musical, making its debut at the Marquis Theater. Paul Chihara and John Driver Shogun, the musical, with elaborate costumes and sets, stars Philippe casnoff. “Pillowing” is the only song from a Broadway musical this season to praise sex toys: “He never tires of women like a lazy, jaded man.”
2002 Unlined and up to a stream due to illness of the lead actor (Misty Cotton) in his staging of The Spitfire Grill, the Laguna Playhouse in California is issuing an all-round bulletin to find a replacement to star in its three-week production. New York composer Jacques Valcq receives frenzied demand from California: Are Percys from recent regional productions willing and able to go into production? Valcq has the answer: New York actress Kathryn Blake, who was nominated for a Carbonell Award in 2002 for her performance in the Florida Stage production. She flies to California and takes over the role for the remainder of the race.
2008 The Lincoln Center Theater production of Horton foote‘s Divide the domain, featuring Elizabeth ashley, Hallie Foote, Penny fuller, and Gerald McRaney, opens on Broadway at the Booth Theater. Michael wilson directs the comedy-drama about the fight of the Gordon clan of Harrison, Texas, who must decide to sell the family mansion to the developers.
2011 Seminar, Therese RebeckThe play about the creative and personal tensions of four young novelists who take a private writing class with a potentially damaging teacher, opens on Broadway at the Golden Theater. The stars of production Alan rickman like the professor with the sour tongue, with Lily rabe, Jerry O’Connell, Hamish Linklater, and Hettienne Park like his students.
2014 A revival of Edward albeePulitzer Prize-winning family drama A delicate balance opens on Broadway at the John Golden Theater. The cast includes Glenn Close, John lithgow, Lindsay Duncan, Bob balaban, Claire Higgins, and Martha plimpton.
2016 Sutton Foster stars in an intimate Off-Broadway production of Sweet charity, opening at Pershing Square Signature Center. The New Group ‘s cover of Neil Simon, Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields’ musical is directed by Leigh Silverman and choreographed by Joshua Bergasse.
